The House of Representatives, under Republican leadership, has delivered a significant victory to President Donald Trump and his administration, which, if approved by the Senate, could fundamentally alter the influence of activist judges over the administration. This achievement comes with the passage of The No Rogue Rulings Act, a measure designed to restrict district court judges from issuing nationwide injunctions.
To provide context, President Trump has faced ongoing challenges in executing his preferred policies, such as the deportation of gang members linked to terrorist organizations like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. These efforts have been hindered by activist judges within the district court system who issue injunctions that must subsequently be appealed to the Supreme Court.
In response, the House has taken steps to address the actions of these judges through the No Rogue Rulings Act, which was approved on Wednesday, April 9, with overwhelming support from Republican representatives—only one Republican opposed the bill, and no Democrats voted in favor. Representative Derek Schmidt (R-KS) emphasized the bill’s importance in an interview with Fox News Digital, stating that it would curtail the practice of “judge shopping,” where plaintiffs select judges who align with their political agendas rather than uphold justice. He remarked, “Many things are labeled commonsense around here, but this truly is one of them.”
Furthermore, the conservative representative pointed out that district court judges have brought this situation upon themselves through their excessive use of nationwide injunctions. He noted, “The fundamental goal of limiting the overuse of nationwide injunctions previously received support from Democrats. It is now backed by Republicans, and I hope this vote will garner bipartisan support.”Also weighing in on the issue was Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX), a member of the House Judiciary Committee alongside Rep. Schmidt. He expressed to Fox News that district court judges, by acting in an activist capacity, have demonstrated a need for legislation to curtail their authority. He stated, “Many judges appointed by Democrats have behaved like activist liberal attorneys in robes, attempting to obstruct President Trump’s nationwide reforms. The No Rogue Rulings Act aims to limit this unchecked power.”
Another Republican representative who shared his views with Fox News Digital was Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA), who contended that unelected judges should not have the power to impede the president’s campaign agenda. Rep. Feenstra remarked, “Over 77 million Americans voted for [Trump’s] pro-American policies and expect to see them implemented swiftly. There is no justification for activist judges, whose jurisdiction does not extend nationally, to completely halt [his] agenda.” Additionally, Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) conveyed to the outlet that these judges appear to harbor a “vendetta” against the president and therefore require oversight. Rep. Stutzman asserted, “The judicial vendetta against President Trump’s agenda must be addressed. Nationwide injunctions issued by activist judges have obstructed the will of the American people and, in some instances, their safety, since the President took office.”
