Rep. Nick Langworthy, a Republican from New York, disclosed that one of Governor Kathy Hochul’s senior aides has been indicted by the FBI on multiple charges related to treason. Linda Sun, who held the position of Deputy Chief of Staff in the New York State Executive Chamber, is accused of acting on behalf of the Chinese government and receiving millions of dollars from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
For context, Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, has faced significant scrutiny since her administration’s contentious stance against the Trump administration regarding her stringent congestion regulations and controversial open border policies.
Linda Sun, the former civil servant now embroiled in scandal, is a Chinese-American who dedicated decades to public service within the New York State government. She occupied several key positions, including Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Hochul and Deputy Chief Diversity Officer under former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
This situation came to light on September 23, 2024, when Nick Langworthy, the chair of the New York Republican Party, criticized the corrupt practices of the Democratic leadership during a hearing. He stated, “Just three weeks ago in my home state of New York, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Kathy Hochul was arrested on federal charges for acting as a secret agent of the Chinese government.” In concluding his remarks, he issued a stark warning, saying, “This should alarm everyone, regardless of political affiliation, that in a state with a budget exceeding 220 billion dollars, known as the financial capital of the world… This is not a minor or naive government; the fact that this could occur in New York is astonishing, and to make matters worse, this is not the first instance of New York State being compromised by the CCP.”Providing further context, United States Attorney Breon Peace issued a statement to the Department of Justice (DOJ). He clarified that, “As alleged, while ostensibly serving the people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff within the New York State Executive Chamber, the defendant and her husband were actually advancing the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP.”
In support of his argument, the attorney highlighted that Sun profited significantly from her illegal activities. He remarked, “The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family by millions of dollars. Our Office will take decisive action to prosecute individuals who act as undisclosed agents for a foreign government.”
Reinforcing this assertion, FBI Acting Assistant Director Curtis provided insights into her operations. He stated, “Linda Sun, a former employee of the New York State government, served as an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government, while her husband, Christopher Hu, facilitated the transfer of millions in kickbacks for personal benefit. Sun leveraged her influential position among executives to secretly advance the agendas of the PRC and CCP, posing a direct threat to our national security.”
