17-Year-Old Athlete Austin Metcalf Dies During High School Track Meet — Details

In an interview with NBC 5 on Tuesday afternoon, Jeff Metcalf shared that his son, Austin Metcalf, was killed when a fellow student, armed with a knife, became agitated after being told he was seated incorrectly.

Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, witnessed the incident and attempted to stop the bleeding, according to Metcalf, who noted that Austin did not know the assailant.

Metcalf explained that Hunter was born two minutes before Austin, emphasizing their inseparable bond. “They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding him, trying to staunch the bleeding as he died in his brother’s arms,” Jeff Metcalf recounted. “When I rushed to the scene and saw him on the gurney, they told me he wasn’t breathing. I was so distressed that I needed to find his brother, and we hurried to the hospital after I noticed the blood and the wound. We prayed, and although I cannot comprehend God’s plan, they were unable to save him. This is murder.”

Jeff Metcalf described his son as a high achiever with a 4.0 GPA, the MVP of the football team, and a young man with a bright future ahead, including plans for college.

“He was on the right path,” Jeff Metcalf remarked. “He was loved by many and was a natural leader.”What kind of upbringing did this child have? I am not here to judge. What lessons did he absorb? He took my son’s life by stabbing him in the heart with a knife during a track meet. When asked to relocate due to being inappropriately positioned, he bowed his head. “This is murder,” stated Jeff Metcalf. “I have already forgiven this person, as you know. I have. Matters are in God’s hands. God will take care of me. God will look after my family.”

The memories that remain for the victim’s father include the hunting trips the three of them have enjoyed since the boys were just two years old. In hopes that Austin would finally catch his first hog, they went hunting together last weekend. “He did,” his father remarked.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses and to support Austin’s brother with his education and counseling needs.

Seventeen-year-old Karmelo Anthony has been arrested and charged with the murder of Metcalf, according to the Frisco police. The police have not yet established a bond for Anthony, and it remains uncertain whether he has secured legal representation.

“The Frisco Police Department mourns alongside all those impacted by this tragic loss and offers its heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are enduring unimaginable sorrow,” the department announced on Wednesday. “We are working in conjunction with the Frisco Independent School District and will continue to provide any necessary support during this profoundly challenging time.” The specific location of the stabbing within the stadium has not been revealed by the police; however, Texas Sky Ranger reported that multiple officers were seen investigating a section of the stands near the track.Over 100 students from eight different schools took part in the 11-5A championship district track meet held at the stadium on Wednesday morning, as reported by a spokesperson from Frisco ISD. In response to the stabbing incident, the stadium was quickly secured, the event was suspended, and all students were promptly returned to their respective campuses, according to the district.

No additional injuries have been reported.

The district has stated that counselors will be available to support students during this time of mourning, and a tribute to Austin will take place during the second period on Thursday.

Frisco police are continuing their investigation. They encourage anyone with information to send a text message with the code FRISCOPD and their tip to 847411, or to contact the police department’s emergency line at 972-292-6010.
